On the suggestion of an Antiques Board member, I am pasting this thread into this forum..............and not only because it was suggested - while re-reading it recently I realized how amusing some of it actually is!

Brass Stove-top Coffee Percolator?

While doing some (long overdue) housekeeping, I was cleaning this and decided that after half a century of ownership and of wondering what it is, I would finally ask “Is this an older coffee percolator and HOW old could it be?” Despite extensive inquiries, Mr. Google has been of no assistance.
Measures approx. 10” tall inclusive, and is a nominal 5.5” in diameter. The body and lid appear to be crafted of brass with a tinned lining and porcelain knobs. The bail handle is missing.
The body appears to have been crafted of a single piece as there are no discernible seams (even around the bottom), a technique that I am sure can assist with dating (
). The spout is applied, but with no visible solder, etc.
The interior is “divided” into two chambers. The upper one is tinned and communicates with the lower one (which does NOT appear to be tinned) via the v-shaped slot under the spout and via heated water being forced up the water pipe.
The interior water pipe and grounds basket seem to be of two different qualities – the basket is relatively thin tin, while the water pipe seems to be heavy, machined aluminium. The round screw-on plate on the top of the two screens shows signs of machining as opposed to having been cast or molded.
Beyond the numeral “!” impressed on the spout, there are no other discernible markings.
Is it possibly based on the original Count Rumsford design (can’t locate a diagram) or is it a hybrid percolator/vacuum/gravity pot?
It has obviously been used, so I do not believe that it is decorative (HOW could something this utilitarian and ugly be termed Decorative??).
Lots of photos to follow……………….

Interesting -- I can't help much except with more questions. :womanvery-happy: What would be the purpose of the knob on the spout?

I think one is meant to hang onto that, and the knob on the lid, while one pours.

Is it possible that you would hold the bail and push on spout knob to make it pour out?
If its legal we will buy it, sell it or trade it.

Agreed - there is no handle in the side as with most bail-handled pots to assist with pouring - impossible with a bail handle alone.
And I might add, it was probably quite uncomfortable to use with that configuraton coinsidering the weight of the pot and contents.

Woops! Let me ammend that last statement about "comfortable to use" - if the pot were hanging from a hook, the knob on the spout would be very convenient and easy to use. Only if you were holding it by the bail would it be uncomfortable.

Ok, thanks -- now for some musing. My parents used a percolator all through my childhood. The basket that held the grounds had holes in the bottom. The heated water would "perk" up through the tube in the middle, then drip down through the grounds in the basket and fall into the pot below. I don't see any holes in the bottom of this basket. Not saying it's not some kind of percolator, but it must work differently than the ones my parents used. (Or perhaps there are actually holes, but I just am not seeing them?)

Fig - I use a stove top percolator every Sunday morning - and there are holes in the bottom (and sides) of the grounds basket - and you are correct in that this one does not have any................the NEW mystery is HOW could I not have noticed that?

and it perks into the bottom of the grounds rather than dripping on top of them

so you can pour without spilling, it is pretty beat up , damaged and missing the handle, would not consider drinking coffee or for that matter much of anything else less one wants to get sick from metal toxicity.

The pot looks like it was tossed out and somebody picked it up, the pot isn't old at all, rather current, old coffee pots are characterized by the use or ceiling urn bags and bag rings, were still in full production as of 1957 to at least 1965, after that the percolators of the 50's slowly came and replace the urn bags.

Well, sort of a let down ......... it works just like any percolator - only MUCH faster. The only thing I can;t figure out is how the brew got out of that basket and how the (admittedly finely chopped) tea came along with it..................

perculation and how fast it starts is purely a function of how much heat is applied so a 15k btu burner will out perform a 10k btu by 33 percent, it's science.

I ain't drinkin that stuff! Aside from the "mystery mushies" slopping about in the bottom compartment, it was made with Lipton Tea..................from a bag ............ something I keep around for the hoi polloi..........(just gave me a memory for the forum)...............
Actually, I was examining this again and realized that the water pipe has NO opening on the top either.......... another clue missed! What I did discover is that the pipe has two holes on the sides inside the grounds basket. It appears that when the water boils it is forced up the pipe and into the basket and when the basket fills it over runs the top through that (really fine) screen.................and some how, the brew only fills the top part BUT does run into the bottom when you pour...............but to no apparent ill effect.

See - you caught that right away - I totally missed it (see my previous reply). But it appears that the brew does shoot up to the lid somehow as there are tea leaves on the dome..................

Strangely designed, as I think Terry indicated earlier.... If you want to sell this, I bet you could write up a great description that would convince somebody it was such an oddity that they have to have it!

If I had the patience to decipher the descriptions of the original "percolator" designed by Rumsford, I may find that this is based on his principle .......... But the brain is a bit clogged tonight.

This whole thread should be included in your forum, Mansons! So funny. And yes, my parents had a percolator coffee maker (long before Joe DiMaggio and "Mr. Coffee"). It had a little glass knob on top so you could see the coffee percolating, and it made a rather loud "bloop, bloop" sound when percolating. And yes, the basket had holes top and bottom, IIRC. Thanks for the memory!

Fig,
Quite by chance really..
A poster over on the 'Vintage' Forum posted a photo of an item they wanted to identify....and it looked very similar to the base, or bottom part, of a Russian Samavor I sold a few years ago.
I found Manson's item while browsing through current listings for Russian Samavors..:smileyhappy:
Isn't the one in the listing missing the heating part?

You're both right; It is odd that there is no way of heating...

Fig,
If you check the one in the listing, there's an indentation in the white base, which leads me to believe something was meant to sit in there.?

It looks like an older starbucks coffee pot, I was just wandering where is the very first pot that was used in starbuck coffee shops, that would be iconic as a center piece of a collection, on the other hand it could also have been a coffee pot that belonged to a homeless type. Not to worry I am certain that there are coffee experts just lurking in the back ground, will just have to wait.

I noticed that also, and was wondering about what size it would need to be. I could see maybe some small heater to keep it warm, but to heat it up in the first place? Seems like it would need something more. But maybe it was slooow brewed. :cathappy:

They centianly have some nice ones , all polished brass (brasso) and copper (brasso), I would get one but I just don't drink that much coffee and it seems senseless in my particular case since I don't collect them, actually I was wondering if in fact if this in fact at one time was a savor

Because of the dents on the bottom, perhaps it was perked on the stove, then the inner contraptions removed and hung on the server? The thing on the bottom would keep it warm.

Yep! That's it! Thanks for the link.
After thinking about it and doing some more reading (with a clearer head) this operates on the vacuum principle. The water (about a quart) is "sucked" up the tube when heated and forced through the basket, ultimately leaving the bottom empty (I was wrong about the two compartments communicating at the V near the spout - it only appears as such). DUring my experiment in the stove top I was surprised at how fast it "completed" the brewing so I imagine a small spirit lamp or candle would do the job economically and just as well.
By the way, I believe this is actually brass, not copper.
Thanks again!
