M - Music Room
No good photos of the before with this space:
From the storage hall before the wall into the Library/Living Room was taken down, and before the ceiling was lowered to 8' to accommodate the Christmas Closet which was built over this space, and the wall was built (from the foreground, up along the right) to form the storage hallway - and separate off the door to the powder room. Ain't nothing like leaving the loo and immediately facing a crowd of people who have turned around at the sound of the opening door (or worse......)
I know that the name Music Room sounds pretentious - but it needed a name and since the piano (?) and CD collection and the sound system (in the old Victrola cabinet) are there, it seemed natural. Some general views (note the cabinet under the shelves has been moved to the reception foyer to accommodate a really dreadful Hammond organ that I can't seem to GIVE away, let alone sell)
This space was necessary (not only because it was THERE) but as a buffer between the entertaining areas beyond it and the formal eating space. I prefer a dining room that can be closed off during prep and after the hoards have left naught but crumbs, but that was totally impractical here, so this room sort of separates functions. And I like the "drama" of going from a large space with a 14' ceiling to a "tunnel" with only an 8' ceiling, and back into a space with a 14' ceiling. Otherwise it would all run together like a bowling alley.............
The light fixture is probably circa 1930's, from a family home. And no, it was not installed by an electrician - it has a heavy duty "lamp" cord wired into it and the cord runs up through the ceiling to the Christmas Closet, through the wall, and is plugged into an outlet in my bedroom....................the sconces are actually old electrical fixtures (circa 1920's) from the sun room of the same house. They are not connected to anything and I can pop off the "candles" and insert actual candles when desired. Two of the "pillars" that flank the CD shelves were there, along with an exposed pipe and a metal support column - I enclosed the last two to "formalize" the wall and even things out.
There are no windows in this space - and it had the feel of a real "tunnel" until I pasted up some (very expensive, custom) wall paper remnants and hung draperies around them. They don;t LOOK like windows, but the effect is there..........and the wall paper depicts a stone wall with small floral and bug motif......many people stop to examine the paper. They also balance the room, mirroring the columns and shelves on the opposite wall.
